Family Meetings

We’re a family, and as such, we’re in the business of awesomeness.

The Bennett's enjoy some quality time shooting and driving and flying and pinballing at the arcade!

As a couple, we’ve been diligent about protecting one night per week (usually around 4 hours) as a ‘date night’. It’s a time that we can look forward to in the busyness and business of the week to know we can relax and spend some quality time together. The activities are not always elaborate or even premeditated. In fact, last week, we decided to go get pizza and play arcade games at Bullwinkles. In many cases, we’ll go out for a leisurely dinner, or maybe a movie.

Another thing that we’re getting better about inserting in our week is a “Family Meeting”. Some families use them as an opportunity to check in to connect, but in our case, it has become something more significant. Naturally we want to be in touch with where one another are at in every realm, but we also wanted to use the opportunity to give ourselves some purposeful direction that we can link arms in pursuing.

Lately, with the big changes and busy pace of life, we had missed a few of our meetings, and it had been reduced to a 5 minute check in about our upcoming week’s schedule. This last Sunday we took the time to re-articulate the framework of our weekly meetings. And, because I enjoy sharing and documenting our adventure, I’m going to post it here. Plus, in the case that something goes awry and we don’t have our notes with us, we can refer to this post as a reference to what we came up with.

As an aside, it’s worthy to note that it’s all too frequent that the important things in life get put on the backburner in order to handle the urgent stuff that comes up. If we all live in a reactive mode responding to the fires that pop up, how are we ever going to actualize the important things that we’ve all had on our list for so long and yet have made such little progress. This is one way that we’re working to bring the important things to the forefront in our relationship.

Saturday

Bacon and chocolate chips in a pancake is a new heavenly addition to the breakfast world. Try it, seriously.

Yesterday was a good day. I think I’ll mostly show you pictures, but here’s the bullet-list of what I got to do:

  • Gave Herb a ride to the airport (at 6:17a)
  • Observing DIPAC fishermen (I have grand designs to catch some fish… we’ll see how that goes)
  • UPS & Recycling drop off
  • Made Bacon & Chocolate Chip Pancakes (wow, these are good)
  • Took a nap with Heather
  • Helped Megan move
  • Went for a bike ride to Herbert Glacier with Patrick
  • Business meeting / planning / personal development
  • Camera gear shopping
  • Popcorn & show
  • Bed!

Really I only have pictures during the pancakes and the bike ride, but both where equally excellent.

So, without further adieu, here are some photos from the bikeride (hold your mouse over the image for the caption, click for a bigger version):

A Virtual Tour

I’m not completely sure what I’ve been so busy with these days. Perhaps it was the hike up McGinnis, or the multiple hours over Labor Day weekend spent making amazing images from the pictures that Heather and I took at a July wedding. Or, perhaps it’s been in part filled with the beginning of the semester and having friends join crash on our floor. Or maybe it’s been cooking with our new fancy cookware… Could it be the bike rides? Or dinner with friends? Awe heck, I dunno.

Seems like a lot has been going on, but I can’t pin it down to just one thing. At any rate, over a week ago, our friend Rekann took this video for us and I’m just getting around to posting it. It weighs in just under the 10 minute mark, but it counts as our update as well as a tour of our new residence.

Naturally, we’d like you to come visit, but until then, I hope this tides you over!

Quick Check In

Yup, tis a quick check in post. My internet connection is woefully slow. I’m putting up with it for your sake, so, well, enjoy it just a little bit more than usual. (Because, yes, my internet connection is that painful.) Anyhow, here’s our second installment of the good ol video log! As you can tell, it’ll take some practice to get good with this approach…

Our first try:

and, of course the “real” one:

The Rules for Being Human

This set of rules has been passed around for some time and I don’t know (or care too much) about the original source. What strikes me is how profound and salient each point is. I believe these apply towards our individual journey, as well as in our relationships. In fact, this passage was included by a dearly close friend and mentor in one of his wedding gifts to my wife and I over a year ago. Take a look for yourself and reflect on your experiences with them.
